The following Working Mom Confession is by working mom, Cori Ramos. If you’d like to share your confessions of a working mom, there will be details on how to send your story to us at the end of this post.
And now, here is Cori’s confession…
My kids were latch-key kids since my oldest was 11 years old. At the time I was working in Corporate America as a sales manager for AT&T. This position required me to work long hours and days off were far and few in between.
If I had to compare my boss to anyone, it would be to Meryl Streep’s character Miranda in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” She was just as demanding, only I didn’t run her personal errands like picking up dry cleaning or walking her dog.
Anyway.
Because I was always at work, my kids learned how to get themselves ready for school, how to lock up the house when they left in the morning and microwave meals when they got home from school.
And since I couldn’t always stay home when they were sick, I taught my kids how to self-medicate. When I realized this, I had a tremendous amount of mom guilt. I mean, I should have been at home to give them their meds and give them chicken soup instead of phone calls in between meetings and quality assurance calls.
In case you’re wondering, I did worry about over medicating, which is why I put as much emphasis on taking the right dose as much as I did teaching them about stranger danger.
My kids are all grown up now, happy and healthy…but every now and then I think back to that time and I wonder if their latch-key childhood had a negative affect on them.
