This is a story of the night I took two purses…
Last Friday night, I went out with one of my best friends. A girl’s night out to some nice bars and restaurants is a rare thing for a mom with three kids and an intense full-time job.
I was taking the late afternoon and early evening to get everything ready for my absence. For example, I took my 2.5-year-old Harper swimming in hopes of tiring her out (she has been fighting her bedtime lately).
After swimming, I gave her a warm shower, washed her hair, put on her jammies and fed her dinner. She was nice and fluffy. The older girls were largely taken care of.
So I get her home, put her on our bed and set her up with Gigglebellies.
Getting Ready
Then it was time to get ready. I put on my animal print high heels with dark jeans and sheer shirt. The last thing is apply some makeup and get my purse. I have a little Kate Spade purse that I have had for years. Dave bought it for me one Christmas and I love to use it for going out. I call it my “mini Spade”!
Anyway, I am taking my important cards, ID, cash and phone from my day to day utility purse into my mini Spade and get the text that the car is on the way. By the way I am about 15 minutes late due to all my preparation so we missed out on our Uber and had to go with the more expensive version. To top it all off I had missed all the texts coming from my friend – eek!
So I am feeling pressured to leave the house and say goodbye to Vivienne (my oldest) – she is with Harper and then Harper starts yelling “mommy mommy.” So I have to make a split-second decision.
Do I go up and say goodbye to my crying two-year-old (because I feel I have to go to her) or do I jet out the door so she can start recovering from mommy being gone?
Well normally I’d be full of mom guilt but I resisted my mommy instinct and jetted out the door.
The Night I Took Two Purses
I got in the car, greeted my friend and we immediately start catching up with each other. Awesome beginning to a night out. Then I look down and I have BOTH purses with me! In my haste and all the distractions I forgot to leave my utility purse.
So I spent an entire night with two purses. And instead of relaxing and enjoying the time with my friends, I kept having to make sure I didn’t forget I had two purses on me.
My friend, being the great friend she is, offered to get my back and make sure I didn’t forget a purse anywhere we went. She, however, is also a distracted person.
A surgeon with two kids going through her own stress, she shared with me that she carried a cafeteria tray all the way back to her office. It made me feel better and I can certainly relate. More than once I have carried gym props that happened to be in my hands, into the locker room – just forgot to put them away while my head was somewhere very far away, out of my body, LOL!
Back to our evening.
Being the responsible people we are, we ordered an Uber to get back home.
I gathered my two purses, my coat and got into the cab.
When we got home, I was very careful not to trip on my very high heeled shoes. The last thing I wanted was the end the evening with a YouTube moment!
I opened the door to a quiet house and of course the cat ran out. I put all my stuff down, put on some real shoes and brought the cat, back into the house.
Then I thought…”wait a minute, there is only one purse on the kitchen counter. CRAP! I left one of my two purses in the cab. Luckily I had the number to the cab company. I called the guy back and he came back right away so I didn’t lose my purse. Whew – that was a close call!
Wrapping It Up
I learned two lessons from this night. One is to just forgive yourself for those embarrassing things you do when you are so distracted and two, never rely on someone who carries cafeteria trays to their office to help you not forget your second purse.
If you’ve got a mom moment like this, I’d love to hear about it!

It totally sounds like something I would do! Mommy brain!

I can definitely see myself doing something like this. Thanks for sharing your story!

I’m probably not too far away from a moment like that. Twice in the same week, I went out with my shirt inside out. No clue whatsoever until getting undressed at the end of the day. Guess that’s better than having to obsess over it, but I’m sure it didn’t help my winner status. And, with things like that I say, “if that’s the worse thing to happen to you that day, consider yourself blessed.”
