When the new year starts there’s this excitement in the air. Okay, it’s probably the winter breeze but go along with me here. 🙂
You pump yourself up because this is the year you’re going to focus your goals and crush them. You’re not messin’ around anymore. It’s time to get serious!
You even go so far as to take extra time with your goals, making sure each one starts with intention and ends with impact.
Then a couple months go by and you realize you are not as focused on your goals as you set out to do at the beginning of the year. You suddenly have the ‘some day’ attitude. Or you’re waiting to start when the ‘time is right’ but then there never really is a right time, right?
Those are the monkeys on your back that will keep you from meeting your goals. If you’re struggling to focus on your goals, the following tips may be helpful to you.
How To Focus On Your Goals
If you feel the year slipping away and want to give up, take a few minutes to reset your mindset. Here is what I do when faced with “goal give up.”
- Sit quietly – not at your desk – and imagine you are back in that space where the year had not yet started. The time when you were envisioning what 2021 would look like. Get back into that headspace, where everything was possibility.
- Read your goals, even outloud if you don’t feel too weird about it. Make sure they still feel right. If not, make the tweaks you need.
- Get gritty with your schedule. Look at how you spend your time and ensure you are focusing on what’s most essential to move you forward. If not, either delegate, push off or renegotiate with whoever is requesting and ask them (especially if it’s your boss), what should be dropped from your priorities to take on the new projects/ requests.
From here, keep monitoring. It takes constant vigilance to protect time and energy to focus on what’s most important. Good luck!
