I love getting together with my friends – that is, whenever I can find the time between boardroom meetings and soccer practice. When we do, we exchange mom ‘war’ stories over a glass of wine and console each other with an “aw, don’t feel bad, I do that too” response.
A funny thing though, we share a lot of the same “working mom life” stories.
The past few Friday Confessions have been my own like when I confessed that I nap in my office after sleepless nights with the kids or how I don’t pack my kid’s lunches.
But this week, I have a confession from a friend of mine that I thought I’d share because I think we can all relate to this one.
Confession #4 I Throw Away (Some) Kid Party Invitations
A friend of mine used to sometimes throw party invitations in the trash. When I first heard this, I was a bit shocked but then I realized she may be onto something.
Depending on the age of your kids and when the birthdays land, you might be spending the better part of your weekends getting gifts and taking your kids to Chuck E. Cheese or the trampoline place or the kid gym or the pool for various kiddo parties.
And for elementary school-aged kiddos, sometimes it’s hard to know if you should stay or drop and run. There are always those moms who will stay, sometimes for social reasons. And when that happens, I feel obligated to stay. Others take advantage of the time to get something done or have “me time.” I fall into that camp for sure.
Wrapping It Up
In my experience, if a dad is bringing the child it’s mostly a drop off. Sometimes I wish I was the dad…less pressure to stay and linger.
To be fair, my friend only ignored invitations from kids who were not close to her kid. Like those who invited the entire class, for example – she’s not a monster.
The way I look at it, it’s OK to opt out of some of these parties. If they just become too much just remember it’s OK to opt out gracefully with zero guilt. So give yourself the permission to say no if it’s better for your sanity.
Have you got a confession of your own to share? Tell us about it in the comments section below. And before you go, please share this post with other moms. I’m sure this will make them feel better about tossing out their kid’s invites!
