It won’t be long before the kids are headed back to school. Moms everywhere will be doing the happy dance to celebrate and surviving another summer break.
While some moms might take the day off from work for the first day of school other working moms may not get to. So the first day of school has to go off without a hitch.
5 Back To School Tips For Working Moms
Once you’re at work, no doubt at some point in during the day while you’re in the conference room or meeting with a client, your mind will wander to the kids. You may even wonder if you gave the kids lunch money or if you told them where to wait for you after school.
And all of that over-thinking can really affect your productivity at work.
So here are my personal tips to help you and your children have a stress-free first day of school and all year long.
Set Up A Calendar
Set up a calendar for the family as well as nannies or other care takers so that everyone is on the same page when it comes to after school routines. That way everyone knows what activities are going on, the time and who will be picking up the kids.
Family calendars like Cozi keeps all your family events and activities in one place. Plus, you can plan meals, save recipes and even keep and share a grocery list.
What I like most is that you can access it from any mobile device or computer. If you don’t have one set up, go to Cozi and get one going for you and the family for free.
Prepare The Night Before For The First Day Of School (And Every Day)
A great way for a stress-free morning is to prep lunches, laying out clothes and bath-time the night before. Also make sure school supplies are in backpacks and ready to go in the morning.
Something else you can prep the night before is your work-related to-do’s like email and phone calls. It’s one less thing you’ll have to do in the morning and it will give you more time to spend with your kids before they head off for school.
Make Your Plans
You can use this tip for the whole school year. Make plans for after school pick-up. Will the kids ride the bus? Are you picking them up? Do you have caregiver in charge to get the kids?
And if the kids have after school activities, who is charge of picking them up then?
Talk It Out
If you’re like me, you’re probably going to be tossing and turning, worrying how the kids are going to do on the first day of school. And in the next room, the kids are probably up thinking about the same thing.
To ease the back to school anxiety, have a talk with the kids before bedtime. Ask them to share how they’re feeling and if you pick up on anxious emotions, address their concerns so it doesn’t keep them (and you) up at night.
Which leads me to the last bullet…
Get A Good Night’s Sleep
A good night’s sleep for you and your kids will make the morning rush a little easier when everyone is well-rested and ready for the day.
You know the saying “early to bed, early to rise.” So for the kids, start the bed-time routine a little earlier.
And for you, maybe a nice, long bath with candles and a glass of wine before hitting the sheets to unwind and mentally prepare for the new school year.
Wrapping It Up
I hope these tips will help you and your kids have a great first day of school and throughout the year. If you have any tips to add, share them about it the comments below.

Great advice. It was so tough for me when I was a working mom. Not being able to always be there. But with some planning and preparation, things can get easier.

These are great tips! I have a few years before my little one gets into school, but I will pass this on to someone who needs to read it.

Very helpful information for working moms. I used to have a Cozi calendar when my kids were younger. It helped me stay organized with all our appointments and after school activities. Thanks for sharing!
