Uber: rides at your fingertips…best thing since well, maybe trains at the turn of the century.
Mommy: giver of life
Hacks: a clever short cut
Old English Language Proverb: Necessity is the mother of all invention.
Today’s reality: Desperation is the mother of all Uber mommy hacks.
Uber is a magical ride service that allows you to order a car from your phone at the touch of a virtual button. Unlike a cab, you pay automatically—no fumbling with a credit card or the cash in your wallet (which admit it, you don’t really have anyway). I have taken Uber more than 30 times and have never been late once.
If you haven’t used Uber, well hurry up and download the app for the love of god!
Then, let me open you up to the world of Uber mommy hacks.
5 Uber Mommy Hacks
There are tons of creative ways to use Uber when in desperate times, whether you’re stuck at the hospital with a sick child and need that Subway delivered bedside pronto or your child has a nasty fall on the playground while you’re at work and you have to meet the ambulance en route (those are both real examples by the way).
Here are a few Uber mommy hacks to inspire you:
#1 You have three drivers but only two cars. Uber can fill those gaps.
#2 You have a big boss coming in from out of town who needs a particular type of ice cream and you just don’t have the time to drive across town to get it. Have Uber go to the address, then when the driver calls you (as they always do when they arrive) explain that they need to go inside the store, pick up a package and drive it to another address (i.e. your work address)
#3 It’s time to be superhuman. You are on the hook for the car pool and need to get two kids from different houses to soccer practice but an important work situation comes up.
Send Uber (note, very important that the parent of the other child is okay with this, some people may have security concerns with Uber, however, it’s entirely possible to be a regular with the drivers so if you can, build a trust with a local driver, which will open up so many more possibilities. A friend of mine says her Uber driver “is practically on payroll”)
#4 Your usual “go to” ride to the airport falls through and you quickly need a back up. Order Uber, it’s faster than a cab.
#5 If you need to take care of an elderly parent, send an Uber to take them to important appointments. Even if you meet them there, it can be worth those few extra minutes and peace of mind.
Wrapping It Up
Working moms need all the help they can get. Every mom has her bag of tricks to make it all work. Uber is just one of those I have up my sleeve – as do many other moms I know.
